Fat transfer is for anyone who desires an all-natural, long-term solution to volume loss and who also has excess fat in another area which they would like to have removed.
Fat transfer is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that removes fat from one area where it’s not wanted via liposuction and reinserts it into an area of the body that’s in need of replenishment. A tiny incision will be made at the removal site so that your fat can be extracted with liposuction. The fat is then placed in a centrifuge where it’s processed and purified to remove debris, excess fluid and dead cells. The purified fat is then reinjected in small droplets throughout the target area to restore a more youthful and fuller appearance.
The use of anesthesia will depend on the amount of fat being transferred. Small amounts can be transferred using a local anesthetic while larger amounts will require IV anesthesia or general anesthesia.
Because the injected material comes from your own body, fat grafting is a very safe procedure with minimal risk of side effects. You will notice soreness and swelling both at the removal site and at the injection site, but these will dissipate quickly on their own in the days following your procedure. You may also experience some bruising at both sites which may take up to a few weeks to subside.
You should arrange to have someone drive you home from your procedure. It’s also a good idea to have someone available to help you with basic needs for a few days following your surgery. For example, you may need assistance with shopping and preparing meals.
Typically, patients need about one week off from work. After approximately two weeks, you can return to exercise, and after about four weeks, you will be back to all normal activities.
Fat transfer provides long-lasting benefits. Although not all the transferred fat cells will survive the transfer process, the fat cells that are retained should provide years of enhanced volume in your treatment areas.
Fat grafting can be used to replenish volume in the face, hands, feet, breasts, hips and more.
